Indian tennis legend Sania Mirza has been appointed as the mentor for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Women’s team ahead of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023, marking a bold move for the franchise. Mirza, a six-time Grand Slam winner, most recently played at the 2023 Australian Open where she was the runner-up in the mixed doubles event alongside Rohan Bopanna.
Mirza reacted on her new role as mentor for the RCB women’s team, saying: “It is a pleasure for me to join the RCB women’s team as a mentor. Indian women’s cricket has seen a tectonic shift with the Women’s Premier League, and I am really looking forward to being a part of this revolutionary pitch. RCB and its brand philosophy perfectly resonates with my vision and outlook as that’s how I have approached my playing career and it’s also how I see contributing to sports post my retirement.”
According to the franchise, she is someone who the players can easily relate to and respond to in a team environment. RCB had a highly successful outing at the WPL auction, acquiring star players such as Smriti Mandhana, Ellyse Perry, and Richa Ghosh. The auction was a particularly special moment for Mandhana, who was bought for a record amount of Rs 3.4 crore.

Her stature, gravitas, and attitude are expected to inspire and bring much-needed panache to transform the team with a bold personality.
