On Sunday, India finished their competition at the U-20 World Wrestling Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria, with their best-ever result. At the prestigious sporting event, Team India won a total of 16 medals in various categories, including a gold medal, four silver medals, and 11 bronze medals. Antim Panghal, a 17-year-old wrestler, made history on Friday when she won the coveted gold medal in the women’s 53kg division.

The current junior Asian champion Panghal’s achievement made her the first Indian woman to ever finish with a gold medal in the U20 world wrestling championships. Altyn Shagayeva of Kazakhstan, who had won the bronze medal in the U20 Asian Championships, was Panghal’s opponent in the gold medal match. Panghal triumphed impressively by an 8-0 score. Sonam Malik, a Tokyo Olympian, earned silver in the women’s 62 kg final alongside Panghal, and Priyanka, the current junior Asian champion, won silver in the women’s 65 kg division on Friday.

The Women’s Wrestling competition saw Team India take home one gold medal, three silver medals, and three bronze medals, according to the Sports Authority of India (SAI). It is indeed impressive that India performed so well when fighting against top wrestling nations like the USA, Iran, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Ukraine, and Japan. In 2011, India had its previous best showing at the U20 World Wrestling Championship, taking home two gold and one bronze medal.
