The U-19 women’s team, captained by Shafali Verma, defeated England by seven wickets to win the first-ever U-19 T20 World Cup on January 29, 2023, unlocking yet another magnificent chapter in Indian cricket history. India dismissed England for 68 in 17.1 overs at the Senwes Park in Potchefstroom, South Africa, after inviting them to bat first. The England batting order was destroyed by Titas Sadhu, Archana Devi, and Parshavi Chopra, who each took two wickets. A wicket was also taken by the team’s captain Shafali Verma, as well as by Mannat Kashyap and Sonam Yadav.
In response, India accomplished the target in 14 overs, with the help of Soumya Tiwari and Gongadi Trisha, who both scored 24 runs. Shafali went out for 15, while Shweta Sehrawat, who finished the competition with the most runs scored, managed 5 from 6 balls.
Shafali, the team’s captain, was unable to control her emotions after the historic victory during the post-game awards ceremony. As Shafali expressed her gratitude to everyone for their support throughout the campaign, she started crying.

Shafali came in third place overall for runs scored in the tournament. In seven games, she scored 172 runs at an average of 24.57, including a half-century.
The entire unit would receive a cash prize of 5 crore, according to BCCI secretary Jay Shah. “Women’s Cricket in India is on the upswing and the World Cup triumph has taken the stature of women’s cricket several notches higher. I am delighted to announce INR 5 crore for the entire team and support staff as prize money. This is surely a path-breaking year,” Shah tweeted following India’s victory.

The entire unit was also invited by the secretary to Ahmedabad on Wednesday, where India and New Zealand are set to play the third T20I.

While the entire team will depart for India, Shafali Verma and Richa Ghosh might remain in South Africa, where the Women’s World T20 will take place the following month. The two players are members of the Indian team that begins their competition against Pakistan on February 12th.
