Jurgen Klopp shocked the football world when he announced his decision to quit Liverpool at the end of the season. The German did extend his contract until 2026, but will leave the Reds in 2024, as initially agreed.
It’s especially unexpected that Liverpool has performed so well this season and is enjoying their position at the top of the table. However, given Klopp’s enormous shoes to fill, things will undoubtedly be difficult at the club right now, as the German manager is nearly irreplaceable.
With Klopp’s departure, certain Liverpool players might reconsider their futures at the club. With a new management in place, the system might change drastically, and the dressing room may undergo a complete revamp. Here’s a look at three players that could depart Liverpool at the end of the season.
Joel Matip
Joel Matip has been an incredible addition for Liverpool since his free transfer to Anfield. The Cameroonian is regarded as one of the best buys in Premier League history, but his time at Liverpool appears to be done. Matip’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and he is also out for the season due to an ACL injury. Matip, 32, appears to be on the verge of leaving on a free transfer.
Thiago Alcantara
Another player in his thirties, like Matip, will see his contract expire at the end of the season. The Spaniard recently recovered from an injury that kept him out since April. While the midfielder is one of the best in the world on his day, injuries have hindered his progress at Liverpool. Thiago’s contract expires at the end of the season, and he appears to be leaving to play the rest of his career in a less physically demanding league.
Mohamed Salah
During his tenure at Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp has transformed the club into a force to be reckoned with, and Mohamed Salah has been the team’s standout player. The Egyptian great has been a menace up front throughout the years and is still the player that consistently makes the difference for the Merseyside club. However, with Klopp leaving, Salah may reconsider his choices, particularly with Saudi Arabian clubs pushing for his signing since last summer. Salah’s contract at Anfield expires in 2025, and the Reds may contemplate selling him if they receive an offer too good to pass up and reinvest in a younger player.
