Canada hasn’t won a championship since the Gold Cup in 2000, while the United States extended their home winning streak over them to 22 games, dating back to 1957. Prior to leaving at halftime due to a calf injury and being replaced by Luca de a Torre, Reyna assisted both goals.
Richards scored his first goal for his country by heading in Reyna’s corner ball from seven yards to Milan Borjan’s left. Richards was unmarked as he scored his first goal for his country. Callaghan made three adjustments from Thursday, replacing right back Joe Scally for the banned Weston McKennie and Sergio Dest with central defender Walker Zimmerman in place of Miles Robinson, midfielder Bren Aaronson, and right back Bren Aaronson.
After the Gold Cup, Gregg Berhalter will continue in the same role as head coach, it was announced on Friday. Despite leading the US to the World Cup Round of 16 in December, his contract was not renewed. The dispute that resulted in Berhalter’s resignation in January was brought on by Reyna’s lack of initiative during World Cup training and the outraged response from his family.
