Commonwealth Games 2022: Multi-Nation Athletic Event Bids Farewell With Splendid Closing Ceremony

Highlights:

  • The Commonwealth Games 2022 ended with a power-packed closing ceremony at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.
  • The CWG Federation flag was lowered to signify the conclusion of the Birmingham Games and was then transferred to Victoria, Australia, the location of the 2026 CWG.
  • 4,500 competitors from 72 nations competed in this year’s Commonwealth Games over the course of 11 days.
  • Prince Edwards remarked that the event had motivated the present and future generations and has shown what binds people together.

The closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games 2022 was breathtaking as the celebration of sports and the chase for gold concluded. The ceremony was nothing short of a royal event, encompassing various power-packed performances ranging from the Bhangra beats to the Apache Indians’ stirring performance. The grand event that brought the Birmingham Commonwealth Games to a close was witnessed at the Alexander Stadium, which was exceptionally refurbished for the event.

The flag for the Games was lowered and given to Victoria, Australia, which will host the CWG in 2026. Ocean Colour Scene, a band from Solihull, had performed to open the closing ceremony. The band Dexys Midnight Runners, founded in Birmingham, then played some music. UB40, one of the most popular bands of all time, accentuated the celebration while other performers from the Midlands region delighted the audience with their performances.

4,500 competitors from 72 nations competed in this year’s Commonwealth Games over the course of 11 days. The Indian contingent performed remarkably well at the games. Despite suffering a significant setback from Neeraj Chopra’s injury, India still won 61 medals, five fewer than they had four years prior on Gold Coast. However, they managed to pull themselves together and give it their all every time they took the field, and they did so with great determination.

As is customary, the Commonwealth Games Federation flag was lowered to signify the conclusion of the Birmingham Games and was then transferred to Victoria, Australia, the location of the 2026 CWG. Prince Edwards then ascended to the stage’s centre and announced the conclusion of the CWG’s Birmingham edition. In addition, he extended a formal invitation to Victoria, Australia, to host the Commonwealth Games in 2026.

Prince Edwards remarked that the event had motivated the present and future generations. It has shown what binds people together. He declared the closure of Birmingham 2022 on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen, our patron, and the Commonwealth Games Federation as the sky was lit up with fireworks.

Model-turned-activist Neelam Gill made a grand entrance into the stadium as Punjabi MC played out “Mundiyan To Bach Ke” to a packed Birmingham audience celebrating the cultural phenomenon of the 1980s and 1990s. Steven Kapur, an Indian-born singer-songwriter and reggae DJ known as “Apache Indian,” set the tone for the closing ceremony. After the musical performance, Dame Louise Martin, the president of the Commonwealth Games Federation, and Martin Green, the CEO of Birmingham 2022, among others, gave their final remarks.

An incredible presentation of the Commonwealth sport has been witnessed over the past 11 days, and the Closing Ceremony offered an incredible climax to the grand tournament, added Martin.
