Rohit Sharma Will Lead Team In New Zealand T20s, Virat Kohli’s Future As Captain To Be Discussed

It is highly probable that the Indian team will be led by Rohit Sharma in the 3 T20 Internationals against New Zealand which will begin from the 17^th of November. Additionally, Virat Kohli’s future as the captain of the One Day International (ODI) format of the game will soon be discussed when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) leadership along with the national selectors will meet in the next couple of days.

The possibility of the outgoing T20 skipper Kohli losing his ODI captaincy is strong.

According to the reports from PTI dated 31^st October, another failure to win an ICC tournament will put his leadership future in doubt and when BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah hold a virtual meet with the national selectors in a couple of days’ time, the leadership issue will be discussed.

As of now, India does not have any ODI assignments in the remainder of the year and even next year as a matter of fact. There are only a handful of 50-over games on the schedule with another T20 World Cup set to be played in Australia in 11 months.

When asked if Rohit Sharma will be given rest, a senior BCCI official was quoted by PTI as saying, “First things first, the squads for New Zealand series need to be decided. Rohit hasn’t yet said that he doesn’t want to lead in the T20 Internationals against New Zealand.

“And why would he not want to lead? It’s his first series as full-time T20 captain”.

Having said this, there are some sources who have indicated that the top players such as Rohit Sharma could take a break from the two Test matches against New Zealand which will be played in Kanpur (November 25 to 29) and Mumbai (Dec 3 to 7).

It is possible that the players who are given rest for the T20Is against New Zealand will come back for the Tests matches, while the players who will play the shortest version will then get a break before the South Africa tour starts which will happen around the end of December.

As of now, India has only 3 One Day Internationals matches in the current home season and all 3 of them will with all three of them being against West Indies. Those 3 matches will begin in February.

BCCI is keen on having a two-year master-plan going into the 2023 World Cup.

While the BCCI is in no hurry to announce the new ODI captain, there would not want a separate skipper for the white-ball format of the game for just three matches with 17 T20I matches in India till June.
