On This Date, 9 Years Ago, Sachin Tendulkar’s Dream Came True, But Gautam Gambhir Is Not Happy With MS Dhoni’s Winning Six

After 28 years, India won the ICC Cricket World Cup in the year 2011 which was one of the best cricket matches of the decade. With Shewag going back to the dressing room on the 2nd ball of the game and Tendulkar, too, was sent back after scoring 18 runs to the stands. Indian and fans all around the globe thought that Sachin’s dream of winning a single World Cup will remain unfulfilled.

However, the middle batting order had something else in mind. Virat Kohli scored 35 runs, with Gautam Gambhir on the other side attacking the Sri Lankan bowlers left and right. However, Virat Kohli was departed with 114 runs on the score board and 3 wickets already down.

Then came MS Dhoni, and what happened next was history, Gautam Gambhir scored 97 but was caught and balled by Dilshan.

MS Dhoni with Yuvraj Singh on the other side brought the World Cup home after 28 long years, and fulfilled the dream of Sachin Tendulkar of being a part of the World Cup winning squad. And what a way that was, MS Dhoni finished it off in style with a six from the 2nd ball of Nuwan Kulasekara’s 8th over of the innings.

However, making the anniversary of the colossal victory, Gautam Gambhir took to social media that there is one “obsession” which the people should bid adieu to, the winning six from MS Dhoni. He said that the tournament was won by the help of the entire Indian cricket team and the staff.

On the ninth anniversary of the World Cup victory, Gambhir was particularly irked with a post which was posted by ESPNCrickInfo which highlighted the MS Dhoni’s winning shot.

In the World Cup Finals, Gautam Gambhir was India’s go-to man, be it the 2000 T20I World Cup final where he hit a crucial half-century in what was a low scoring match against Pakistan or helping the team in the 2011 World Cup final where he scored 97 runs and stepped up the chase.

Ghambir’s 97 came at a time of dire pressure as both Sachin and Shewag were sent back to the dressing room early in the game at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. The fact that it was the final of one of the most important cricket tournament in the world, but also that it was happening in India itself was a mountain in itself.

Gambhir was dismissed when team Indian neede a little over 50 runs to win with a Required Run Rate (RRR) of close to 6.

Indian could not have asked for a better finish of the game and certainly for the tournament as Dhoni launched the ball to the stands and held his pose for the photographs as Indian beat Sri Lanka by 7 wickets and 10 balls to spare for the World Cup title.

However, we do believe that Gambhir’s innings in the World Cup final is amongst the most underrated performances in the history of the game, as a matter of fact, Dhoni went on to win the Man of the Match for his unbeaten 91 runs from 79 balls .
