Virat Kohli made it clear that he was unhappy with the events that made the on field umpire change his decision on Ravindra Jadeja’s dismissal in the 1st ODI (One Day International) played against West Indies in Chennai in the 3 match series. The Indian skipper said that outside intervention forced Shaun George (on field umpire) to consult with the Third Umpire to review the initial decision which eventually led to Jadeja given out.
Jadeja’s incident took place in the 48th over when India was batting and Roston Chase’s throw from the short mid-off hit the stump as Jadeja was completing his single. Chase’s appeal did not have much conviction for on field umpire George to refer the third umpire, however, moments later the replay on the Television broadcast showed that Jadeja’s bat did not make it to the crease before the ball hit the stumps.
Kieron Pollard, West Indies’ skipper was given this information thus prompting him to have a word the on field umpire, forcing him to refer with the third umpire. Unhappy with the delayed decision, Kohli confronted the 4th umpire asking for an explanation for Jadeja being declared out for a run-a-ball 21.
After getting defeated Kohli said “The thought is simple, the fielder asked ‘how is that’ and the umpire said ‘not out’. The dismissal ends there” at the post match presentation ceremony. He added “The people sitting on the TV outside cannot tell the fielders to then tell the umpire to review it again. I’ve never seen that happen in cricket”.
India put up a score of 287 at a loss of 8 wickets at the end of 50 overs with Rishabh Pant scoring 71 (69) and Shreyas Iyer 70 (88), however they were bested by the West Indies side when they won the game with 8 wickets and 13 balls left to spare. West Indies 291 at a loss of 2 wickets with Shai Hope scoring 102 (151) not out and Shimron Hetmyer 139 (106).
Kohli continuing on Jadeja’s dismissal said “”I don’t know where the rules are, where the line is drawn. I think the referee and the umpires have to take that up, see that incident again. And figure out what needs to be done in cricket. People sitting outside can’t dictate what happens on the field. I think that’s exactly what happened there. We would have got 15-20 runs more had something not happened out there”.
However, the West Indies’ skipper said that at the end the correct decision was made and that is what’s important “For me at the end of the day, the right decision was made, which is important. We appealed and the umpire didn’t take it at that time, but eventually the right decision was made”.
