World’s Biggest Cricket Stadium Virtually Ready: Ahmedabad

India will soon be the proud holder of the World’s Biggest Cricket Stadium. The new stadium will have a capacity of 1.10 lakh spectators and is near ending now. The Sardar Patel Stadium or more commonly known as Motera Stadium will be completed earlier next year and will soon host an international match soon after its completion.

This stadium is to be built at a cost of around $ 110 million in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, and when completed will take away the title from Australia’s Melbourne Cricket Ground of being that biggest cricket stadium in the world at the moment with a capacity of almost 1 lakh spectators.

According to reports, the Sardar Patel Stadium (Motera Stadium) could host its very first match in March 2020 which will be an exhibition match between World XI and Asia XI. This will also be the inaugural game for the stadium.

The stadium’s construction started in 2017, and once completed the stadium will have world class amenities including but not limited to 4 dressing rooms, 70 corporate boxes, an Olympic size swimming pool, and a clubhouse. Motera Stadium will also become India’s largest stadium, overtaking Kolkata’s Eden Gardens as its capacity has been dropped to 66,000 from 1,00,000 spectators as a major rebuilding project was undertaken.

Speaking of Eden Gardens, the Kolkata stadium hosted Indian’s first ever day-night Test match, also called Pink Ball Test Match. The iconic stadium was flocked by fans for the Day-Nigh Test Match between India and Bangladesh (it was Bangladesh’s debut day-night test match as well). Number of celebrities were also present for the iconic match including former cricketers, politicians, and even athletes from other sports.

Notably Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar both were present at the Eden Gardens and amongst others, Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee were also present.

India, currently World’s top ranked Test team have more than 10 stadiums that are fully capable of hosting international matches, however Test matches often fails to attract crown in such huge numbers that was seen during India’s first Pink ball game.
