Stefanos Tsitsipas, the fifth-ranked player in the world, lost to Yannick Hanfmann on Wednesday in the opening round of the Mallorca Open, losing 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, a concerning result before Wimbledon. The Greek lost convincingly to his 48th-ranked German opponent after another early departure on grass at the Halle Open last week.
On July 3, the Wimbledon main draw gets underway. Hanfmann, who has a strong serve, faced no break points in the opening set and only dropped one service game throughout the entire encounter. With a forehand down the line, the German successfully defeated the erratic top seed.
“A lot of things have to work to beat a top 10 player, I had a really good start,” remarked Hanfmann. “Having a match on the first day was really helpful with the wind and the grass.”
In the grass court tournament’s quarterfinals, Hanfmann will either take on Australian Jordan Thompson or Spaniard Feliciano Lopez, who will be playing in his final match before retiring.
In the previous match, Christopher Eubanks shocked Ben Shelton by defeating him 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, and 7-6 (7/2) whereas Arthur Rinderknech of France defeated his fellow countryman Constant Lestienne with ease (6-3, 6-2), and he will now play Eubanks in the round of eight.
In the other quarterfinal, Lloyd Harris takes on Pavel Kotov, while Adrian Mannarino faces Corentin Moutet.
